Damage Control

[a photo project]

1.

I've got the world on a string, sittin' on a rainbow
Got the string around my finger
What a world, what a life, I'm in love!
I've got a song that I sing

- from a song “I’ve Got the World on a String” by Harold Arlen, lyrics by Ted Koehler

Damage control is action that is taken to make the bad results of something as small as possible, when it is impossible to avoid bad results completely.

Damage control is an essential part of the life of a yo-yo. Not talking about a toy, but a person, a lifestyle. Yoyoing as in wandering around, changing repeatedly from one position to another, fluctuating. Those people can be temporarily or permanently displaced, migrants, refugees, war victims, travelers or vagabonds, artists or blue-collar workers. When yoyoing, it’s important to stay outside any system; reaction to external factors must remain stoic, pain processed internally. Still, damage control comes into play when external factors become overwhelmingly stressful: life slows down at the speed of 1/15 of a second or less, hormones like dopamine are substituted by cortisol and adrenaline, and the fight-flight-freeze pattern is enabled.
