INTERVALS
“Space is the product of interrelations; as constituted through interactions, it is always in the process of being made.” — Doreen Massey, For Space (2005)
Intervals is a photographic project created between 2019 and 2023 across China and Spain.
This series reflects a period of unexpected transitions. After moving from Ukraine to China, I experienced strict pandemic lockdowns and border closures that suddenly made travel complicated, if not impossible. Yet, when I finally relocated to Spain, I realized that geographic freedom didn't instantly bring peace of mind. Changing cultures didn't automatically loosen the invisible constraints inside my own head, and a sense of compromise remained.
By presenting these images as diptychs, I deliberately pair the photographs to focus on the quiet spaces—the intervals—between frames, vast distances, and differing political realities. Through real-world environments, I explore how color and composition can evoke an inner landscape shaped by perception and memory. I don’t look at these places as an insider or a tourist; there I am merely a transient witness.
Ultimately, Intervals is about the fragile spaces we negotiate when we are caught in the in-between. It is a search for quiet personal freedom within the rigid structures of the modern world.
